Sourcing Sustainable Materials

At Bombora Custom Furniture, we love to use local native southern Australian hardwoods to create our wooden furniture and cabinetry such as Messmate, Wormy Chestnut and Blackbutt for their beauty, durability and to reduce travel miles. Our new timbers are sustainably sourced and certified to ensure minimal harm to the environment and are sourced from local timber yards.

We use family-run businesses as close as possible to our workshop to source components for our furniture. This helps to create local jobs and reduces travel miles.

Sustainability for our team

The way that our people work needs to be sustainable, balanced and healthy. Our staff members time and energy is a precious resource that is very important to us. Rather than having fixed hours of work, our workshop team has a fixed amount of work to complete in the week and once it’s done, they’re done! We believe that when the surf is good or the golf course is calling… work can wait!

Reducing our impact

In 2022, we installed a three phase solar system at our workshop which powers all of our machinery, lights, heating, cooling and computers without the use of fossil fuels.  We produce way more electricity than we use and are feeding that green power back into the grid for our neighbours.

The majority of our team lives within a 10 minute drive to our workshop. Not only does this reduce commute carbon emissions, it also makes for a better work-life balance.

All of our pieces are packed for transport in blankets and recyclable materials.

Rather than purchasing fancy new boxes to send out items such as maintenance kits, we re-use and recycle.

We are constantly developing new products to divert timber offcuts from landfill. From this desire, our range of recycled wood handles was born.

Running an eco-responsible business is vital to us and the filter through which all our business decisions are made.

Giving back

In 2015 we launched our 1 piece = 1 tree initiative whereby we plant a tree for every piece of furniture that we create. 15 trees is a fantastic non-profit organisation that enables businesses and individuals to offset their carbon emissions by planting trees on their behalf. So far, our trees have been planted in the Bellarine Peninsula, Wangoon Victoria and Flowerdale.

Our goals

Our goal is to move from sustainability to regeneration in which our business has a positive impact rather than just “doing no harm”. We are currently working towards getting our B - Corp certification and are always reviewing our practices to ensure we are constantly improving.
