Types of Timber for Furniture
Creating sustainable furniture from native Australian recycled timber
In Australia, we are so lucky to have such a wide range of beautiful and sustainable timbers available to us to create truly stunning wooden furniture. At Bombora, we primarily use timber from the local Victorian Eucalyptus species of Messmate, Wormy Chestnut and Australian Chestnut to build our pieces. We prefer to use these species as they are hard-wearing, have low travel miles and create a beautiful finish. We only use wood that is recycled or has been certified as sustainable to ensure it has been responsibly sourced.
New Messmate
The tones of Messmate timber range from a pale to medium brown to a light peach. A quintessential characteristic of this timber is the regular gum veins, well-defined rings and coarse grain. The tone of sustainably harvested Messmate is more consistent in comparison to the recycled Messmate.
Recycled Messmate
With light to medium brown tones, recycled Messmate timber has the benefit of being reclaimed as well as markings such as nail and bolt holes that tell the story of its previous life. In comparison to sustainably harvested Messmate, the recycled has more variations of tone.
Wormy Chestnut
Wormy Chestnut timber is a collection of Victorian species of Eucalyptus. This timber is light brown to cream in tone with a few fine black sapline markings.
Australian Chestnut
Australian Chesnut timber is a collection of several Victorian Eucalyptus” species. This timber is a select grade that has minimal to no black sapline markings. It is a light brown to cream tone.
Blackbutt (select grade)
Blackbutt timber is a species of Eucalyptus native to southeastern Australia, Blackbutt is creamy with a pink undertone. The timber is a select grade so it is hand-picked at the timberyard to have minimal black markings.
American Oak
Native to Northern American, this American Oak timber has a beautiful wavy grain pattern that is completely unique. The tone ranges from creamy blond to light brown.
American Black Walnut
A newly harvested timber from the Juglans Nigra tree native to Northern America, American Black Walnut timber is stunning and unique with swirling grain patterns and rich chocolate to latte tone.
Tasmanian Blackwood
Tasmanian Blackwood timber is a species of Acacia native to Australia. This wood has tones of cream, brown and red within the same stick of timber.
